Coffee is one of the most popular commodities on Earth. It's grown by nearly 125 million farmers, from Latin America to Africa to Asia. But as man-made climate change warms the atmosphere, the notoriously particular coffee plant is struggling. Places like Colombia, which once had the perfect climate to grow Arabica coffee, are changing. Now, experts estimate the amount of land that can sustain coffee will fall 50 percent by 2050. It's not just a crisis for consumers but for the millions who have made a livelihood out of growing coffee.

Vox Atlas, along with Borders, Observatory and Darkroom are my favourites. Especially because Sam Ellis had same simillarities with Johnny Harris who recommended him into Vox. Great series! Keep it up

i dont see the issue here? if they cant grow as much coffee anymore the price will just get more expensive, evening it out basically. also coffee isnt exactly healthy either and it would hurt nobody if they couldnt drink coffee

Crisis isn't lack of coffee. It's the F'n up of coffee by infusing rubber flavor and cig ashe, making it pretty much undrinkable. I'm a long time coffee lover and know wat a good coffee is supposed to taste like, and over the last several yrs, they have been F'n it up for pretty much every brand out there, Gevalia, Seattles Best, 8O'Clock, Walmart, Safeway gourmet, Caribou. Only brand i haven't tried yet, but will, is Starbucks, and don't care for Dunkin Donuts. If Starbucks is also F'd up, that's it for coffee drinkin. Unless u want to pay double or triple Starbucks price and try Death Wish.

"Man made climate change" - how about all those climate changes before man... Climate change is always and has always been there, no matter if man did anything to accellerate or slow it down..

true, but you cant deny ever since factories became wide spread, it has accelerated the intensity of climate change by large margins. Its actually smart to differentiate climate change by nature and climate change by man, because the long term effects yet the short time span it takes for changes are pretty noticable

Climate change huh? Why is the consumption of coffee higher than it has ever been and yet the supply is so ample that prices are low? Arabica plants are notoriously fussy and I could not help but notice that the featured plantations were lacking in shade, which is essential when growing this very touchy species.

“Climate change” is not man made... this is a blame game. Geo engineering HARRP and all the DEW started fires are causing extreme changes in our weather. Lyndon Johnson (when president) did a talk at a university talking about he who rules the weather rules the world.

Besides climate the main role in the bad future it s monoculture of plants, which are susceptible to plant desease. The using of monoculture is the most big problem in ecology and depends of money interest and companies irresponsibility

The Ice at the north pole failed to melt as predicted, Now they blame man-made climate change instead of the 5-billion cups of Coffee they drink each year. If they release more Co2 emissions they would be able to grow a lot more coffee trees in more geographies and in a much shorter time than 4-years.
